Why Your FI Number Tracks Spending, Not Income
The calculator's core move is deceptively simple: it takes your annual expenses and divides by a withdrawal rate. At the classic 4% rate, that means multiplying yearly spending by 25. Notice what is absent from that formula: your salary. A high earner who spends everything needs exactly the same portfolio as a modest earner with identical spending, because the pot only has to replace what leaves your account each year. That is why the tool asks for expenses first. Say you spend 2,000 a month (illustrative), or 24,000 a year; your FI number lands near 600,000. Trim recurring costs to 1,800 a month and the target drops to 540,000 — a 60,000 swing from one habit. The lesson the number teaches is that lowering your baseline lifestyle does double duty: it frees cash to invest now and shrinks the finish line you are aiming at.
Where The 4% Rule Actually Comes From
The 25x multiple isn't arbitrary. It descends from research testing whether a portfolio could survive decades of withdrawals across many historical market periods. The finding: drawing roughly 4% of the starting balance, then adjusting that amount for inflation each year, survived most tested windows. That is the origin of "annual expenses divided by 4%." But treat it as a guideline, not a guarantee. It assumed a specific stock-and-bond mix and a defined horizon, and past markets are not a promise about future ones. The sharpest danger is sequence-of-returns risk: a steep downturn in your first few withdrawal years forces you to sell more shares while prices are low, permanently thinning the pot even if average returns later look fine. Under these assumptions you'd cross 750,000 in roughly 22 years. Change one input and watch it move — bump savings to 24,000 a year and the finish arrives several years sooner. The point of running it this way is to see which lever your own hand controls. The return rate is a guess about markets; the contribution and the spending target are choices. Read the year estimate as a range, not a countdown clock.

Savings rate — the share of take-home pay you invest — compresses timelines dramatically because it works from both ends. Every unit not spent is a unit invested and a unit off your annual baseline, which lowers the target itself. Chasing returns, by contrast, usually means taking on more risk or volatility you can't control, and a bad sequence early on can erase the imagined gain. The expensive mistakes are predictable: forgetting that lifestyle inflation quietly raises your FI number every year, ignoring that returns here should be real (after-inflation) not headline figures, and betting the plan on an optimistic growth rate you have no power over.
