What does FIRE mean?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It means having enough invested wealth to live off the returns indefinitely, without depending on a salary.
How is the FI number calculated?
FI number = annual expenses divided by the withdrawal rate. With the well-known 4% rule that is annual expenses times 25. Example: 24,000 a year gives an FI number of 600,000.
What return is realistic?
Broadly diversified stock ETFs have historically returned about 5 to 7% per year over the long run – but with no guarantee and plenty of ups and downs. Plan conservatively and keep a buffer.
