Kilowatt-hours times price, nothing more
Your electricity bill has two moving parts: how much energy you use, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), and the price you pay for each one. Multiply them and you have the energy portion of your bill. The calculator does exactly this, then scales the result to a full year. Say, illustratively, you use 2,000 kWh in a year at a price of 0.30 per kWh. That is 2,000 times 0.30, or 600 for the year, roughly 50 a month. Change either number and watch the total move: at 0.35 per kWh the same usage costs 700. Most real bills also add a fixed standing charge that you pay regardless of usage, so your actual statement may sit a little above the pure energy figure. Knowing the split matters, because cutting usage only shrinks the variable part. Enter your own numbers and the yearly total stops being a mystery.
Where your kilowatt-hours quietly disappear
Usage rarely comes from the things you notice. The biggest silent draws are anything that heats, cools, or runs constantly. Electric heating, air conditioning, and hot-water tanks can dwarf everything else, because turning water or air from cold to hot takes enormous energy. After that come the always-on devices: an old fridge, a second freezer in the garage, and the standby glow of televisions, consoles, routers, and chargers left plugged in around the clock. Individually these sip a few watts; together, running 8,760 hours a year, they add up. Illustratively, a single old appliance drawing 100 watts nonstop uses about 876 kWh a year on its own. Age matters too: a fridge from fifteen years ago can use two or three times what a modern one does. When your calculated bill feels higher than expected, look first at what heats, what cools, and what never fully switches off.
Read the meter, don't guess the number
The weakest input in any bill estimate is a made-up consumption figure. You don't have to invent one. Your last statement almost always prints your annual kWh total, or enough monthly readings to add up—use that as your starting number and the calculator reflects your real household, not an average stranger's. No statement handy? Read the meter yourself. Note the number today, note it again a week later, and the difference is your usage for that week; multiply by 52 for a rough yearly figure. Do this in a normal week, not while you're away or running the heating flat out, or the projection will mislead. For a device-by-device check, read each appliance's wattage from its label, estimate hours of use, and the inventory view builds usage from the bottom up. Two independent estimates that roughly agree—your meter and your device list—are far more trustworthy than one confident guess.
The cheapest cuts come first
Not every saving costs money. The cheapest reductions are behavioural and free: switching devices fully off instead of standby, running full laundry and dishwasher loads, lowering a heating or hot-water setting a notch, and unplugging the second fridge nobody needs. These trim the always-on baseline that the previous sections exposed. Next come low-cost swaps—efficient bulbs, a smart plug that kills standby—that pay for themselves over a year. Only after that does it make sense to weigh bigger purchases like replacing an ageing appliance, where the yearly running saving has to justify the upfront price. A useful habit: change one input in the calculator at a time. Illustratively, if trimming standby saves 200 kWh a year at 0.30 per kWh, that's 60 back—small, but real and recurring. Watching each change move the yearly total tells you which efforts are worth repeating and which barely register, so your energy goes where the savings actually are.

How do I calculate my electricity cost?
Yearly cost = annual usage in kWh × the unit price (cents per kWh, ÷ 100) + the standing charge over twelve months. Example: 2,500 kWh at 35 ct/kWh plus 12 a month is about 1,019 per year. The calculator does it live as you type.
I don't know my kWh usage – what now?
Open the estimator and pick your household size and whether you heat water with electricity. As a rough guideline a one-person flat uses about 1,500 kWh a year, two people about 2,500, four about 4,250. Your exact figure is on your annual statement.
Is my monthly instalment too high?
